Resoland workshop no.5

(28.-30.6.2013) Topic: Josh Graves-the father of bluegrass Dobro

The fifth of Resoland workshops was held on our cabin at Košariská at the end of June from Friday 28 to Saturday 30. The weather was great, although a little bit cooler, it had not interfered with the teaching (and learning) itself. At least we were not sweating from heat as the learning material gave us quite a hard time.

The topic of the workshop was this time: Buck ” Uncle Josh ” Graves – founder of bluegrass Dobro, so after Mike Auldridgeovi this was another workshop focused on the analysis of the style of resonator guitar greats. Although the musical range of Josh Graves was very wide, we focused mainly on songs that capture the essence of his contribution to bluegrass Dobro like:

1 Salty Dog Blues
2 Confessing
3 A Hundred Years From Now
4 Foggy Mountain Rock
5 Foggy Mountain Breakdown
6 Lonesome Road Blues
7 Randy Lynn Rag
8 When Papa Played The Dobro

The teaching was intense, work more than enough and we were relaxing in the evenings with something new to my workshops: a video projection, where we screened live performances of Flatt and Scruggs with Josh’s excellent playing and discussing his technique directly on the big screen. Excellent!
